60-Second Interview with Triathlete Laurel Wassner
Laurel is the youngest half (by 5 minutes) of the Wassner Twins. She is a professional triathlete who specializes in Ironman distance and is is the first cancer survivor to win a professional ironman distance triathlon – She’s now won 5 events as a pro and has recently placed 5th place at the Ironman Latin America Championship and 4th place at 70.3 Ironman Bintan. Laurel is also a photographer and a publisher of the popular food blog athletefood.com.
She takes a minute out of her training, racing and blogging schedule to talk about her obstacles, achievements and, of course, bike bags.
Biggest fear? Black Ice
Greatest obstacle? The biggest obstacle I have faced has been being diagnosed with cancer when I was 23. I fought hard and realized my dream of becoming a professional triathlete.
Superstitions? I write a message to myself on my hand before every race: “FIGHT!”
Biggest achievement? Being awarded a full scholarship at the George Washington University and becoming the first cancer survivor to win an ironman distance triathlon.
Favourite cycling destination? Santa Monica Mountains in California
Favourite song to work out to? You Can’t Stop the Beat from the musical Hairspray
Spirit animal? Edward the Bulldog
Good luck charm? My niece’s hula girl doll from Hawaii comes with me to all the races to remind me of my dream of winning the Ironman in Kona.
One thing nobody knows? My twin sister and I have the exact same V02 Max- 76.7
Never have I ever… skipped dessert!
