A bucket List for Cyclists
Cyclists are an ambitious bunch. We are always looking for that next level: a longer ride, a higher mountain, a steeper grade, a more dramatic view. It’s a fascinating sport, because there are no boundaries. The world is our playground. Most cyclists have a dream list of places they want to ride or climbs they want to conquer. That’s where we come in.
13 years ago, Peter Thomson, a former European racer that had settled in to a corporate job in the US, was talked into taking some of his local cycling buddies to the Tour de France to ride the Pyrenees. The following year, they wanted a new adventure, and shortly after that, Thomson Bike Tours was born.
Over the years, the trips got more and more ambitious. Our guests had iconic climbs they wanted to cross off, new frontiers they wanted to discover. We started riding across full mountain chains and countries. We went to all of the Grand Tours, conquering the biggest climbs of the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta. Just like that, we were in the business of bucket lists. Now, our weeklong adventures average 500 miles and 50,000ft of elevation!
We thought we were selling ‘trips of a lifetime,’ but everyone keeps coming back for more. The demand for bigger, better adventures has never stopped. Each year, we add more bucket list items, like the cobbles of the Spring Classics or the spectacular pro training ground of Gran Canaria. We get so much gratification when we see our guests conquer their latest challenge. Jaws drop, eyes widen, and smiles take over faces. Bucket lists are powerful stuff.
Cycling is truly intoxicating. It starts so simply- that first bike, a few friends, local roads. As you build strength, endurance and community, you go bigger, higher. It feeds both your body and your soul. You struggle, suffer and persevere. The sense of accomplishment at the end of a big ride or top of the mountain is exhilarating. Next thing you know, you are looking for that next bucket list item.
