60-Second Interview with UplaceBMC Triathlete Dirk Bockel
Dirk Bockel from Uplace-BMC is still well and truly at the top of his game after 25 years in triathlon.
He raced the Olympic distance for many years, culminating in a strong performance in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He then switched to Ironman, taking his first title in the 2009 Ironman 70.3 Florida as the first Luxembourgish to ever win an Ironman event.
Since then, Dirk has recorded victories in Ironman (2012 Regensburg) and Challenge (2013 Roth), as well as numerous Ironman and ITU World Championship podium finishes. He has finished in the top 10 at Kona no less than 4 times in the past 6 years and came first place at the Asia-Pacific Ironman in Melbourne this year.

Biggest fear? Swimming by myself in the ocean, I am afraid of sharks. Would love to surf but therefore never really tried.
Greatest obstacle? No obstacle can be too big if I really want to make something happen.
Superstitions? Not really, I am a pretty rational guy. I do believe in signs that the universe sends me.
Biggest achievement? That was definitely finding my wife and our life we created for ourselves. We are living our dream.
Favourite cycling destination? Plenty of destinations are coming to mind and I’m sure to discover many more in the coming years.New Zealand was a good one. Tuscany is amazing and even in my home country Luxembourg, there are some increadible rides. It’s a matter of perception because I actually enjoy riding my bike anywhere.
Favourite song to work out to? I hardly ever listen to music when i train, unless I’m super fatigued and need the support of some crazy beats. No special music, just anything that pushes me to ride to the rhythm of the beats.
Spirit animal? Nope. I have my little dog ‘penut’ and she is my mascot for each race.
Good luck charm? Pre-race I am busy and my mind is on the race, but I never leave without a kiss from my wife and a high five with my coach who also always leaves me with some words of wisdom.
One thing nobody knows? If you follow me closely on twitter and facebook, you will know most of my secrets. I share most of my thoughts in an authentic way, so you should know most of it. The real secrets will remain secrets though.
Never have I ever… Hahaha! There is still a lot of stuff out there that I have never ever whatsoever done. But one day I will. One day soon.
Best thing about having a Scicon bike bag? Is the personalized logo on it and that Chris is such a nice and helpful guy. Glad to have Scicon Bags as team supporters. Every trip is easy now.
