60-Second Interview with Orica-Greenedge Rider Daryl Impey

Daryl Impey started riding in 1997 with his dad and brother. He signed his first pro contract a few years later for a South African- based Microsoft Cycling Team. Shortly after, Impey made the move to Europe and soon got picked up by Team Barloworld.

A few years later at the 2009 Tour of Turkey he crashed quite badly and was told that he wouldn’t ride at pro-level again. Despite this, he was signed by RadioShack the following year and then on to MTN Qhubeka, Team NetApp and finally Greenedge which later became Orica- Greenedge as it is today. Last year he was the first South African to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour De France 2013 and this year won the Tour of Alberta. He managed to take a minute out of his busy racing and training schedule to talk to us about his superstitions, obstacles and favourite tunes.

Biggest fear? Cars on the road- you here about accidents involving cyclists all the time.

Greatest obstacle? My crash in the Tour of Turkey 2009 and being told that I wouldn’t be a competing at a pro level ever again.

Superstitions? I never use new stuff on race day.

Biggest achievement? Wearing the yellow jersey in the Tour de France

Favourite cycling destination? Sabie, Mpumalanga

Favourite song to work out to? Lately, I really enjoy my whole playlist on spotify. It’s a great app and I enjoy loading my own recent tracks to a playlist and listening to it on the road

Spirit animal? Nope

Good luck charm? Nope again.

One thing nobody knows? I’m not a bad gardener!

Never have I ever… Not telling!

Best thing about having a Scicon bike bag? Arriving at home and knowing my bike is in one piece.
